Arrested Development and Game of Thrones are probably two of the greatest TV shows ever. If you disagree, I won’t hear it and I won’t respond to it. With AD’s much-awaited season 4 out on Netflix and Game of Thrones’ soul-shattering “Rains of Castamere” (Season 3, Episode 9), the two shows have been exploding all over the Interweb recently (thus proving that something called “taste” still exists in the world).
If you love both these shows and haven’t checked out Arrested Westeros yet, then you, sir, are an idiot. The hilariously observant Tumblr account takes a screenshot from GOT and juxtaposes it with one of the many, many Bluth quotable quotes.
So why is this infinitely funnier than other TV mash-ups? (There are a few out there, including a Breaking Bad-Arrested Development mash-up). On the surface, the serious fantasy drama has nothing much in common with the crazy sitcom, but once you dig deeper, the truth reveals itself – both are about completely bat-shit crazy families filled with viciously manipulative and/or delusional people trying to get ahead in life. Bat-shit crazy.
Whether we look at cold and calculating mothers (Cersei and Lucille) or outcast sons seeking approval from a disinterested father (Tyrion and Gob), it is the dysfunctional family ties that is the common thread between the two shows. Here are a few of my favourite posts from Arrested Westeros (the funniest ones are on incest, that ALWAYS cracks me up):
P.S. There ought to be a Game Of Thrones/Arrested Development crossover. Fanfiction writers, get to work.
